A Typical Day in the Upper School
Teachers are in their classrooms ready to receive the children from 8.15 a.m. and the girls need to be at school in good time for registration which takes place at 8.40 a.m..
During this time the girls will organise themselves for the day, hand in homework, read quietly or carry out tasks set for them.
At morning break there is a snack of a biscuit and a drink of water or milk. The girls can bring in a piece of fruit to eat at this point.
At lunchtime girls sit on mixed tables with children from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6. The seating plan changes each half term. This gives the girls the chance to get to know children in the forms above or below their own. There is a choice of menu for all the children including a hot meat dish, a hot vegetarian option, a salad bar and homemade bread. There will also be a choice of fruit, yoghurt or a pudding and a drink of water. Each table has a member of staff eating at the table and all children are encouraged to have good table manners.
Morning breaks take place on the Tennis and Netball Courts. If at all possible, the longer lunch break takes place on the school field.
Assembly takes place on most days of the week. On Fridays there is a “Good Work Assembly” where effort, good behaviour, manners and birthdays are celebrated and recognized.
Girls in Form 3 will be set one homework of approximately 20 minutes per night and will also be expected to learn spellings and tables and read regularly. Reading remains an important focus throughout the Upper School. By the time the girls are in Form 6, they may be set two subjects of homework per night of approximately 30 minutes each.
