Liberal Arts Education

What is a liberal arts education?

A liberal arts education emphasises the importance of studying a wide range of subjects – from history to science, through to music, drama, art and sport.

With a liberal arts education children don’t learn by rote – instead they are encouraged to ask questions, to explore ideas and draw comparisons across subjects to gain a greater understanding of the world we live in.

A liberal arts education is about much more than art (though we do have an amazing art studio with a pottery room and a kiln!). At Stormont there are dedicated spaces for the study of science, French and computer technology.

We are also very proud of our sporting achievements; for example, our girls were winners of both the U11 School Games Football tournament and the U11 NLCS Netball Shield and we achieved 1st and 5th place in the IAPS National Fencing Foil event.

What are the benefits of a liberal arts education?

We believe a liberal arts education better prepares girls for further study and their future careers. At Stormont girls are encouraged to voice their opinions, take risks and be the best they can be.

By thinking creatively but also critically, and by challenging them to interrogate complex ideas, a liberal arts approach ensures our girls are building an exceptional foundation for their future endeavours.

We equip our girls with the skills they need to navigate their next steps – for their destination schools and life beyond. We help them to develop of interview skills and confidence in engaging with senior members of staff. We provide opportunities to discover new interests through our co-curricular programme. We are delighted that in the past six years 100% of our Year 6 girls have obtained a place at the independent school of their choice.

We feel our results show that our approach is working. The girls are taught oracy and reasoning through the curriculum which involves current affairs, problem solving and learning the language of opinion and persuasion. Our girls enter the English Speaking Board exams and our results are outstanding. Our Year 5 classes achieved 100% distinction grades for 2025, 2024 and 2023, while our Year 3 classes also achieved 100% distinction grades for 2025 and 2024.

Our co-curricular offerings build on the development of skills and interests in line with the principles of a liberal arts education, and allow the girls to challenge themselves in other ways. Our LAMDA club (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) helps the girls with their confidence, performing and public speaking. In the June 2025 LAMDA exams our girls achieved 95% distinction, with 100% obtaining either a merit or distinction.
